How I won CodeDay Summer 2023
Read how we built an astronaut's fitness app in 24 hours
Back in July 2023, I signed up for a 24-hour hackathon happening in my city - Bengaluru. I registered with three of my friends, we booked a cab, grabbed our laptops, and reached the venue all hyped up.
At the venue, we met some amazing people and ended up forming a chaotic but enthusiastic team of 8… until reality hit: “Only 4 members per team allowed.”
After a lot of discussion, soul-searching, and maybe a few emotional goodbyes, we split into two teams:
- One team built an app
- The other built a game
This was literally our office for most of the hackathon—team meetings, coding marathons, and of course, pizza planning.
The Hackathon Theme: “Astronaut’s Toolkit”
A very specific and… unusual theme. After scratching our heads for a while, we built a fitness app for astronauts. Yup. Because let’s be honest—space doesn’t really come with a treadmill.
We made a web app using:
- HTML, TailwindCSS, and JavaScript (Frontend)
- Python Flask (Backend)
- OpenCV + MediaPipe (for movement detection)
Features Galore
Our app had everything:
- 4 different space-themed exercises ?
- Next / Previous exercise navigation
- Number of sets, reps per set
- Auto switch to next exercise
- Live wireframe of the body
- Detection of the current stance
- Display of an actual astronaut helmet overlay ?
- Live score counter next to a spinning astronaut
And the best of all?
Sigma Male BGM starts blasting when your workout begins
The Stories Behind Each Exercise
We added short stories before each exercise, and my absolute favorite was:
“Once upon a time, there was a Mighty Raju who failed to pull Chutki. After realizing Bheem had insane Earth strength, Raju aimed higher: alien girls. So he became an astronaut. Every day, Raju does bicep curls to make Chutki jealous by impressing ‘girls out of this world’. You are Mighty Raju. Train hard. Get your Alien Girlfriend.”
Yes. That’s canon now.
Pizza-Fueled Programming
At midnight, we had a giant pizza and planned the entire app on the pizza box. True story. Check out the picture of our cracked but creative team:

We pitched our app with all the fun, features, and fitness madness. And we won. CodeDay Summer 2023 — mission accomplished.
Final Thoughts
CodeDay wasn’t just about code. It was about creativity, chaos, coffee, and connections. If you’re ever unsure about joining a hackathon - just do it. Even if your app starts playing sigma BGM while flexing a virtual astronaut.
