Transforming C Programming Labs into an Epic Competition

9 Labs • 3 Batches • 1 Successful Code Race 🏁

A few months back, we wrapped up something truly special: “Code Race” — a full-day, high-energy event we organized as part of the C Programming Lab Internals for our first-year students.

What started as an idea to make lab assessments more interactive turned into an unforgettable day of coding, competition, and pure excitement — running from 8:30 AM straight through to 3:30 PM.

To pull this off, I built a custom test platform from scratch and deployed it on our local network. Students signed in with unique credentials and tackled a series of syntax and logic-based challenges in real time. We had two difficulty tiers:

  • Easy — perfect for building confidence
  • Medium — where the real problem-solving kicked in

Watching 1st-year students dive into the platform, debug under time pressure, and cheer each other on was incredibly rewarding. The energy in those 9 labs across 3 batches was electric!

None of this would have been possible without the amazing support from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering — thank you for trusting us with the initiative and providing the labs, machines, and infrastructure we needed.

And a huge shoutout to the dream team of volunteers who made the logistics smooth and kept everything running:

  • Disha S
  • Harika M
  • Nanditha Bhat
  • Chiru Mounika T
  • Shushmita A

They handled 9 labs like pros, guided students, troubleshot issues on the fly, and brought so much positivity to the day. Couldn’t have done it without them!

Events like Code Race remind me why I love working in EdTech and engineering education — when you combine good challenges, real-time feedback, and a bit of healthy competition, learning becomes fun and memorable.

Here’s to more initiatives that make computer science exciting for the next generation!
